Gasshukua is the Japanese term implying a special training place, but it really means much more,
Traditionally a student of the Martial Arts would periodically take themselves off to a rugged piece of coastline, a spectacular waterfall, or into the mountains for some personal arduous training, this is not to compete against nature, rather to harmonise and perhaps learn a little more about themselves, Sensei has personally found this most helpful over his years of training You don't have to climb the Matterhorn or swim round the Orkney Islands to gain the benefits of a Gasshukua, but it must be difficult enough to present a challenge. Sensei has personally been on Gasshukua's as a guest of the Kyokushim clubs, where he has been asked to wade out to chest deep in the North Sea in April and perform kata, basics, and worst of all, sparring techniques.
From Sensei's point of view, this only resulted in ruined karate suits, a high risk of hypothermia, and very miserable weekend. For our adult Gasshukua we intend to visit a favourite piece of coastline called the Chain Walk at Elie. This will Not be done in karate suits, but rather in some less than pristine clothes from the back of the Wardrobe, it involves a short walk along a beach to the start of a spectacularly rugged piece of Coastline, there then follows approximately quarter of a mile of scrambling and paddling (at the very least), and a return journey by the same means. We have had a very large number of adult students -successfully complete this Gasshukua over the years, and I can safely say that every one of them has felt the better for doing so (not necessarily the next day you understand), but certainly a few days later.
